Ep 016: Hidden Tombs and Visible People

On this Episode of The Web of Queer, we dive back into Classic Who with Tomb of the Cybermen, and then plunge into a discussion of queer representation in the media.

In our Tomb review, we open the plastic and see what shambles beneath. There is diversity, but how do the characters hold up? Do the old Cybermen compare favourably to the new, and how about those sets?

For our representation discussion, we break down tropes, stereotypes, and even acronyms. What do we see in media today that gets it right, and what completely distorts reality? How does seeing ourselves reflected in media help or hinder us? And what messages does the current status of representation send to non-queer folk?

  1. I've been listening to the podcast since the beginning and I really enjoy when you are discussing issues. I like the diversity of ideas especially when discussing characters and plots. However, I find the review of episodes a little slow. I guess because there are so many podcasts that do that, so I wonder if moving the discussions more to the top of the episodes and the reviews to the end?

    1. Hi Shelly! So happy you've stuck around! And really happy that the discussions are something you look forward to!

I'll bring it up next time we all have a chat, but did you notice that we also post the timestamps now for people who want to skip something? Hopefully your podcatcher shows them.
