Ep 019: Mind the Bloody Daleks

In this episode of The Web of Queer, we review the Third Doctor story The Mind of Evil, and start our Big Finish Eighth Doctor Series One reviews with Blood of the Daleks!

In The Mind of Evil, we consider the level of drama this episode attempts to convey. From dramatic phone conversations and character reveals to prat falls and stuntmen, how does the mystery machine fit into the pace of this six-parter?

For Blood of the Daleks, we dive into our first Big Finish story with the Eight Doctor and Lucie! Jessica and Mikayla discuss how they've adjusted to Doctor Who in an audio format, and the group dives into a discussion of how the writing and acting conveys those things we can’t see. Who’s looking forward to more?

Ep 018: Rocky Relationships

On this episode of The Web of Queer, we are all about the ladies! We review the Forth Doctor story The Stones of Blood, and then we discuss Jenny and Vastra!

In our Stones review, we have almost nothing but love for this story about fake druids and floating dots. How do the trio of ladies centre this story, and how scary are those stones, anyways?

The life and times of Jenny and Vastra has been something Who has come back to on many occasions, so how do we think their story holds up? Is their relationship as solid as Strax’s skull, or do we see a different future for these two?

Time Stamps:
00:00  Intro and Announcement
02:08  The Stones Of Blood review
35:26  Jenny and Vastra

Ep 017: Face Crabs and Goo Snakes

On this episode of The Web of Queer, our Christmas review is finally here! We also see our final classic Doctor, with the Eighth Doctor's TV Movie!

In our Last Christmas review, does this gruff, cynical Santa fill our stocking with glee? Does the dream world do Danny any favours? What topics fit the Christmas spirit, and which did we feel should have waited for another time?

In the TV Movie, we get a glimpse at a new Doctor and a new Master! How does everything hold up almost 20 years later? Exactly how far should we keep Americans away from making Doctor Who?

Time Stamps:
00:00 Intro
01:03 Last Christmas review
32:25 8th Doctor TV Movie review

Ep 016: Hidden Tombs and Visible People

On this Episode of The Web of Queer, we dive back into Classic Who with Tomb of the Cybermen, and then plunge into a discussion of queer representation in the media.

In our Tomb review, we open the plastic and see what shambles beneath. There is diversity, but how do the characters hold up? Do the old Cybermen compare favourably to the new, and how about those sets?

For our representation discussion, we break down tropes, stereotypes, and even acronyms. What do we see in media today that gets it right, and what completely distorts reality? How does seeing ourselves reflected in media help or hinder us? And what messages does the current status of representation send to non-queer folk?

01:00  Tomb Of The Cybermen review

Ep 014: Bi Bi Series 8

This week on The Web of Queer, it's our Series 8 overview and a discussion on bisexual characters in Doctor Who.

Our overview discussion starts with talk of our newest Doctor. Now that the series is complete, how does his arc hold up? Have we changed our initial opinions? We then talk about Clara, Danny, and take a deep dive into the concept of lying itself.

Ace! Shakespeare! Ianto! Oswin! Max! We talk about some of the bisexual characters seen on the show, and how effective those portrayals were. What feels authentic, and what puts us off? How does each representation work individually, and what is the narrative they present as a whole?

Time Stamps:
0:00:00 Intro
0:00:50 Series 8 Overview
0:36:48 Bisexual characters in Doctor Who

Ep 013: Rainclouds and Rainbows

This week on The Web of Queer, it’s the review of the series finale Death in Heaven, and our review of the Classic Sylvester McCoy episode, Remembrance of the Daleks!

As the series goes out with a cyberbang, and with so much emotion to wade through, how did we like the closer? What did we dig deep into, and what requires a bit of handwaving?

In our Remembrance review, how did our Classic newbies like this Seventh Doctor story? What stands up, and what falls flat? Where does the nostalgia fit in and what connections to the new series did we notice?

Time Stamps:
0:00:00 Intro + a conversation about word choice
0:05:48 Death In Heaven review
0:43:24 Rememberance Of The Daleks review
